Hypertension - don't suffer more than you need to...

The first and most important thing for anybody who finds themselves suffering from high blood pressure is to visit their doctor, committing to undertake regular ongoing blood pressure tests, as and when recommended. Untreated high blood pressure can be extremely dangerous, but when treated professionally, normally by the long-term prescribing of specific drugs, it can be controlled and have few ill effects on someone’s life.

Blood pressure varies with exercise, anxiety, age, fitness, and smoking and drinking habits; there is often a whole range of lifestyle changes that an individual can undertake that will have major beneficial effects.

Deep relaxation, and visual imagery, as experienced during a hypnotherapy session, has been proven to play a major role in the lowering of blood pressure; it creates reduced sympathetic nervous system activity, whilst slowing the heart rate. When clients are treated with both hypnotherapy and shown alternative cognitive behaviour methods to handle stress, the long-term effect on the lowering of their blood pressure can be dramatic.

‘White Coat Syndrome’ is a situation where the patient’s blood pressure is only raised when they are in the doctor’s surgery: it is thought to be psychosomatic. Surprisingly, the condition is quite common, affecting up to 20% of people who suffer from mild hypertension, (high blood pressure).

The condition can usually be treated with Cognitive Therapy underpinned with Hypnosis. Hypnosis uses the power of your subconscious mind to make actual physiological changes in your body. Once your mind is re-trained to respond to having a blood pressure test with complete relaxation instead of anxiety then ‘White Coat Hypertension’ is no longer an issue.
