At the Elite Clinic in Spain we provide a possibly unique approach to the treatment of Pain, or Pain Management. We incorporate the use of two therapies, CBT, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, which we usually underpin with Clinical Hypnotherapy.

Lets Look at CBT First.

Your body is aching and the pain feels unbearable. The last thing you want to hear is, “it’s all in your head.” For people with chronic pain, the discomfort is very real, and they know all too well they feel it in their bodies.

“If you are lying in bed and hurting, the pain is your whole world,” says Joseph Hullett, MD, board certified psychiatrist and senior medical director for OptumHealth Behavioral Solutions in Golden Valley, Minn, USA.

Then along comes cognitive behavioral therapy as a method of pain control.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a form of talk therapy that helps people identify and develop skills to change negative thoughts and behaviors. CBT says that individuals — not outside situations and events — create their own experiences, pain included. And by changing their negative thoughts and behaviors, people can change their awareness of pain and develop better coping skills, even if the actual level of pain stays the same.

“The perception of pain really is in your brain so you can affect physical pain by addressing thoughts and behaviors that fuel it,” .

What can CBT do for you? Cognitive behavioral therapy helps provide pain relief in a few ways. First, it changes the way people view their pain. “CBT can change the thoughts, emotions, and behaviors related to pain, improve coping strategies, and put the discomfort in a better context,” Hullett says. You recognize that the pain interferes less with your quality of life, and therefore you can function better.

CBT can also change the physical response in the brain that makes pain worse. Pain causes stress, and stress affects pain control chemicals in the brain, such as norepinephrine and serotonin, Hullett says. “CBT reduces the arousal that impacts these chemicals,” he says. This, in effect, may make the body’s natural pain relief response more powerful.

To treat chronic pain, CBT is most often used together with other methods of pain management. These remedies may include medications, physical therapy, or in extreme cases, surgery. But among these various methods of pain control, CBT is often one of the most effective.

“In control group studies, CBT is almost always as least as good as or better than other treatments,” Hullett says. Plus, CBT has far fewer risks and side effects than medications or surgery.

Pain Management – don’t suffer unnecessarily…

Many people ask if hypnosis can really be used to treat chronic pain; is it successful and scientifically proven?

Hypnosis is a widely practiced and time-tested method for managing pain. Hypnosis was first utilised by physicians over 100 years ago as a way to help patients in pain. Early pioneers in the area of hypnosis used it to block the pain of amputations, before chemical anaesthetics were available. Although hypnotism has been utilised by many as a form of alternative medical therapy for many centuries, it remains under close scientific scrutiny within the medical community.

How does Hypnosis Help?

Enough research has been done over the years to prove that hypnosis is an effective tool to help in the management of all kinds of pain, including back pain, cancer pain, labour pains during childbirth, dental anaesthesia, headaches and migraines, arthritis and rheumatism. The brain itself does not feel pain, but instead sends signals to the rest of the body in the form of pain to let you know something is wrong. Pain control hypnosis teaches your brain to redirect your energy away from experiencing pain.

Hypnosis offers a rare window into the mind-body connection, revealing clues about the power and control the mind has to both increase pain, and reduce it. Hypnotism is an important piece of the mind-body puzzle that allows one’s mind and state of consciousness the ability to take charge over the type of pain you are experiencing. Although hypnotism may not be able to cure the underlying cause of pain, in most cases, it can help patients manage it.

Treating Pain Management at Elite Clinics

How Do you Treat Pain Management?

At Elite Clinics we only treat pain management after a client has consulted their doctor, because pain is a symptom of something being wrong with your body and / or your mind.

If the primary cause of the pain is physical, then the client can be taught to induce anaesthesia in the painful area. In these situations our aim is to reduce the pain, but not eliminate it: the residual discomfort reminds the client that there is a physical condition which needs to be or is being treated and warns them not to overdo it.

Sometimes pain may result from a number of non-medical or non-physical causes and people feeling the weight of intolerable guilt from a real or imagined experience inflict pain on themselves to get rid of the guilt. In this situation the objective is to help the clients to forgive themselves and once they are released from their real or imagined mistakes the pain will be resolved.

It is documented in Dr. Bernie Siegel’s book “Love, Medicine and Miracles”, that hypnosis has been successfully used to help speed up recovery time after major operations such as hip replacements. Patients who are given positive suggestions under hypnosis that they will only suffer a minimal amount of post-operative bleeding, do, in fact, recover much faster than patients who are not given any hypnotherapy treatment prior to their operation.
